Bob Marley's Family Wins $2 Million Legal Appeal Against T-shirt Company
March 4, 2015

Online vendors are flooded with shirts memorializing rockers like Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Amy Winehouse, with much of that clothing produced without the authorization of the artists' estate. However, a 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decision could change all that after the court sided with Bob Marley's heirs regarding shirts bearing the image of the late reggae legend that were made without the estate's permission, the Hollywood Reporter writes.

In 2008, Marley's family, who had partnered with a merchandising company called Fifty-Six Hope Road Music, sued clothing makers A.V.E.L.A. for creating Marley shirts that featured the singer's image.

What will they see? Gucci, to start, which more or less owns the first day. Meet the Woman Who Wants to Grow Clothing in a Lab
February 18, 2015

Fashion designers don't usually give tours of biology laboratories, but on a rainy day this fall, deep in an industrial complex along the Brooklyn waterfront, Suzanne Lee guides me through the warren of labs that make up Modern Meadow. Lee recently joined the biotech start-up as its creative director. Beneath her white lab coat she wears leather pants and a neoprene shirt with a lightning bolt. When I ask what exactly a creative director of a biotech start-up does, she points to a plastic bracelet that encases the husks of three beetles. "Nature is the best designer," she says.

The suit, filed Feb. 10, says California-based Skechers uses similar music, visual elements and narrative features to the "Protect this House" ads, which first debuted in 2010. Similarities between the commercials include scenes of athletes climbing pegboards, whipping heavy ropes, boxing and jumping hurdles.
