March 25, 2015

Adidas is on a mission to fix its image, according to the Wall Street Journal.

In 2014, Adidas fell behind Under Armour as the second biggest sportswear company in the U.S., and it has made big mistakes that hurt the company.

According to WSJ, one of the biggest mistakes was passing up the opportunity to sign Michael Jordan when he entered the NBA in 1984:

A University of North Carolina basketball star named Michael Jordan wanted a sponsorship deal with Adidas when he went professional, say people familiar with the matter.

Where Does Your T-shirt Come From? Follow Its Epic Global Journey
March 25, 2015

A simple cotton T-shirt doesn't seem so simple when you begin to trace the various steps in the now-standard vast global process from cotton farm to clothing shop.

The extraordinary success of fast-fashion giants like H&M, Zana and Forever 21 lies squarely in the ability to produce a massive amount of clothing—billions of garments a year—in the cheapest, quickest manner possible. The items sell via private Facebook groups, which number over 100, or on eBay, where the markup can reach 1,000 percent, with running shorts going for $800. On Tradesy, a popular consignment site, the brand comes in fourth, after Chanel and Louis Vuitton, in terms of desirability.

Nike, Under Armour Could Battle for NBA Contract as Adidas Bows Out
March 18, 2015

Adidas is out as the official uniform supplier of the National Basketball Association in 2017. After slipping from second to third in the U.S. athletic apparel arms race last year, Adidas is taking a long hard look at where it's putting marketing dollars. When the contract expires at the end of the 2016-2017 season, someone else, likely Nike or Under Armour, will take over the job of dressing players for games.

That doesn't mean Adidas won't have a presence with NBA players, though, through deals with star players that can often be even more lucrative than league deals.
