An Ode to the Forgotten Baseball Sweater
December 31, 2014

With all the sweater love going around, it recalled the greatest sartorial item in baseball history, one that has been lost in our relentless push into the future. I speak of the baseball sweater.

With its heyday lasting from the early 1900s to the 1930s, the baseball sweater was sadly phased out for leather-sleeved coats, nylon jackets and hoodies. And while those are all fine and dandy, baseball is known for its wonderfully complicated uniforms—button-down jerseys, pants with belt loops and sanitary socks worn under stirrups. With all that going on, couldn't there be room for the shawl neck cardigan?

Under Armour Named Ad Age's 2014 Marketer of the Year
December 31, 2014

Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank does not mince words when asked about the company's first attempt at attracting women. "We stunk," he said, conceding that the original clothing line in the early 2000s was "made by a bunch of dudes." It was so bad the company sent the first batch, worth $600,000, straight to an incinerator.

But lately the company's sales—not its clothes—are on fire, thanks to a groundbreaking women's campaign, smart PR and a take-no-prisoners approach embodied by Mr. Plank, a feisty former University of Maryland football player whose goal is to topple Nike and become the world's...

The Top 10 Moments in Activewear in 2014
December 31, 2014

According to the NPD Group, men's and women's activewear has grown to a $28.7 billion business in the U.S., up nearly 9 percent in the last 12 months, and at double the rate of non-active apparel. Driving that growth is consumers' increasing demand for multifunctional workout apparel that can be worn inside the gym and beyond, and as a result, everyone, from Beyoncé to Betsey Johnson, wants a piece of the pie.

The last 12 months saw an onslaught of new yoga, athleisure and activewear lines enter the space, and in particular, brands such as Nike...

These Jeans Use RFID-blocking Fabric to Prevent Identify Theft
December 17, 2014

Developed in a partnership between clothing designer Betabrand and security software company Norton, a new pair of men's jeans, as well as a women's blazer, will include a lining of radio frequency identification (RFID) blocking material to prevent a trend the two companies are calling "digital pickpocketing." According to the crowdfunding page for the jeans, the two companies claim "that more than 10 million identities are digitally pickpocketed every year" and "70 percent of all credit cards will be vulnerable to such attacks" by 2015.

The READY Active Jeans will include this material on both a front and back pocket ...

5 Fashion Trends That Need to Die in 2015
December 17, 2014

First, the disclaimer: Not every trend on this list is inherently bad. Some of them I actually really like, it's just that in the past year, everyone—from celebs to street style stars to the chick ahead of me in the juice bar line—has been wearing them. I'd like to see people wear something else for a change, but for that to happen, we're gonna need to put a moratorium on these things for a little while. (Just a little while. Like a year?)

December 17, 2014

The lawsuit between Nike and three designers—Marc Dolce, Mark Miner and Denis Dekovic, who turned in their swoosh to start a hip new design studio for rival Adidas—is starting to heat up. After filing a $10 million lawsuit against the designers on Monday, the Portland-based footwear company has submitted new evidence to the court that cast Dekovic in a negative light, citing computer forensic evidence to show a conspiracy was afoot.

According to court filings obtained by The Oregonian, after the three Adidas designers announced that they would be leaving the company, Nike executive Holly Hearn packed up their ...

Nike Files $10 Million Suit Against Designers Who Left for Adidas
December 10, 2014

Nike has filed a lawsuit in Oregon claiming three designers who left for rival adidas took company plans with them, according to a report from Reuters.

Mark Dolce, Mark Miner and Denis Dekovic all announced their departure from the Beaverton shoe giant in September and apparently have been waiting until their non-compete agreement runs its course to start work at adidas.

Nike says the trio violated its non-compete agreements by collaborating with adidas early. From Reuters: "Nike said the designers hatched their plan last April, and pitched Adidas on a design studio that would help craft products ..."
