Safeguard, a top 50 distributor and member of Dallas-based Deluxe Corp., announced that Safeguard distributor Business Products Inc., owned by Brad McCrum of South Portland, Maine, acquired Formsource Inc. of Lewiston, Maine, on Sept. 25, 2013.
Printing Industries of America (PIA) participated in a joint press conference held by the Reforming America's Taxes Equitably Coalition and the Coalition for Fair Effective Tax Rates (CFETR), collectively representing more than 1,500,000 businesses ranging from corporate rate payers to small mom-and-pop printers paying individual tax rates. PIA continues to educate Congress on the concept that tax reform should be viewed through effective tax rates—the amount of taxes businesses actually pay. Rather than promote tax preferences, PIA looks to keep effective tax rates front and center for lawmakers and highlight inequities of the code for businesses of all sizes.
The Hagar Corp., parent company of Specialized Printed Products, eMAGC and Geyer Instructional Products, has acquired the operating assets of Kendallville Custom Printing Inc.
The deal was announced Aug. 30. Kendallville Custom Printing is a long-established printing firm that serves Noble, LaGrange and Steuben counties. Its sales and production operations will be absorbed into Specialized Printed Products at its plant on St. Joseph Boulevard.
The acquisition was facilitated by the Regional Angel Investment Network. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Mark Lovejoy has been around printing presses—and printing press inks—for decades. He got his first job at a print shop when he was 17; he owned his own shop for 24 years. But in 2012, after a career of using those inks the proper way, he had an idea for something a bit different. So he bought a digital camera, a bunch of ink, and started mixing. "The results," he says, "have exceeded my expectations."
Lovejoy's experimented with abstract photography for years, toying with rolled-up paper, emulsion decay and manipulated inkjet prints. But his photographs of ink are the most striking.
The owners of the Chapel Hill Printing & Graphics company have stopped the presses for good after shutting down their office on Fordham Boulevard earlier this summer and filing for Chapter 7 liquidation through the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
Chapel Hill Printing & Graphics owes $268,136 to more than 50 creditors and has only $16,258 in assets, according to its Chapter 7 filings. Its largest debt is $55,537 owed to the N.C. Department of Revenue.
The company's Facebook page has since been transferred to Zebra Print Solutions in Morrisville, but its phone number has been disconnected.

Michael Young, CDC, estimator for The Flesh Company, passed away from a heart attack on August 25 in Parsons, Kan. Cenveo Inc. has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire substantially all of the operating assets of National Envelope. Cenveo's purchase price is expected to consist of approximately $20 million of cash and $5 million of Cenveo common stock.
