Fashion Sense and Sensibility
May 19, 2009

Despite the tendency to “go big or go home” on the runways of New York’s Fall Fashion Week, it’s important to keep things in perspective. At least designers weren’t insisting we accessorize with a live snake or a headdress made out of bubble wrap. This time.

The Feminine Mystique

Go find a cardboard box. It can be square or rectangular. Then, grab a piece of paper (newspaper, wrapping paper, tissue paper, doesn’t matter). Wrap the box. Even those who, during the holiday wrapping bonanza, invariably find themselves covered in little scraps and pieces of tape—not to mention the proud giver of a misshapen, lumpy gift—will agree this is (conceptually) a fairly easy task.

Woody Allen and Dov Charney Settle Lawsuit

Each in his own right controversial, actor- writer-director Woody Allen and American Apparel Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dov Charney seem to finally agree on something

Happy (Earth) Mother's Day!

I recently interviewed Mark Trotzuk, president of Boardroom ECO Apparel, for one of the articles I'm currently writing for our upcoming June responsibility supplement, which is a mini-issue about all kinds of great stuff like corporate social accountability and environmental stewardship.

Ash City USA—Ladies’ Micro Fleece Sport Jacket

I have a big problem with looking like a disaster when I go running. I live only a few short blocks from my place of employment and though it’s silly, I always have visions of running (literally) into my boss while I’m sweaty; red-faced; and wearing an old, ratty T-shirt. The problem isn’t shared by many, obviously, but the sentiment is. This jacket is sleek, and has stretch properties and Lycra binding so you know it will give off that sporty, “Look at me, I’m physically fit and I have the stuff to prove it” vibe you’d like to embody should you run into your boss. It could happen.

Room to Move

Bella—Helena Racerback Tank

I love this top, plain and simple. It has a longer length and a banded bottom, which will hug wearers around the lower hip area while maintaining some movement around the waist and middle. The shape is on-trend and great for summer—and since skinny jeans are seem to be keeping their momentum, I can only imagine this means tapered capris will get some attention this season, as well. Bear in mind, though, it would probably go over better on a younger, more style-conscious crowd.

Stay corporate-friendly this summer.

Distributors can still accommodate the season by offering accepted business silhouettes in different fabrications,” noted Lee Strom, senior marketing manager for SanMar Corporation in Preston, Wash.
