Campaigns Buy Into "Swag Factor" as Volunteer Push

Think of them as frequent flier programs for political action. Instead of a free flight, the reward for loyalty to a campaign can be as simple as a T-shirt or a pin—and as special as preferential seating at a rally when the candidate swoops into town.

Do-this-get-that enticements are coming fast and furiously from political campaigns, with candidates from presidential hopefuls on down more closely tying gear or perks to volunteer output and token donations.

The Midlothian Rotary Club heard a presentation from Ennis Inc. in Midlothian about the company's business and outlook on the future at its meeting July 10.

Ennis Inc. Vice President Ron Graham and Vice President of Marketing Steven Osterloh spoke to Rotarians about their apparel and printing wholesale company.

"When (U.S. Highway) 287 was just a two-lane road, Ennis Inc. moved out to Midlothian," Osterloh said. "In 1998 the company saw an explosion of growth through acquisitions, from 129 million to a 630 million run rate. Most of our products are recognized by other company names and brands that we have acquired."

Pork producers and fashion designers are unlikely allies. But that is exactly what they will be when negotiators from the United States join their counterparts from nine Asia-Pacific countries in San Diego next week to hammer out the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). Specifically, when the negotiations get underway, observers from farms to fashion shows will be counting on U.S. negotiators' ability to make pigs fly, or more specifically, make American pork fly to Asian markets.

The TPP is a prospective regional free trade agreement (FTA) between the United States, Australia, Chile, Peru, Singapore, New Zealand, Brunei, Malaysia, Mexico and Vietnam.
