A team of 14 employees from Newton Manufacturing Company, Newton, Iowa, joined over 1,000 Newton Senior High School students and volunteers for the third annual Community Service Day. Employees were paired with groups of students and planted flowers, picked-up trash and other projects around the courthouse square in downtown Newton.
"I was extremely pleased with the turnout from our staff," said Toni Peska, one of the Newton Manufacturing Company volunteers. "It was good interacting with the students and other volunteers and seeing the community come together."
Community Service Day was organized by ReNew Newton, a local committee concerned with the aesthetic appearance of the community. They collaborated with Newton Senior High School to have students and volunteers work for nearly two hours on 30 projects throughout the city of Newton and surrounding areas.
"Hopefully, we were able to instill a spirit of volunteerism and community pride in the students that will stay with them," Peska added.
