Cotton Market Trims Limit Setback After Planted Acres Report

The apparel industry in Los Angeles, California is riding a small but growing wave of "insourcing" as costs in China and India rise and the city's factories cater to demand for high-quality garb and fast-turn fashion.

One company bucking the offshoring trend by bringing jobs back home is Los Angeles-based Karen Kane, which sells women's clothing—primarily dresses—in department stores like Nordstrom and Dillard's.

The privately held company is shifting 80 percent of its production to Southern California from China as manufacturers take a second look at the true costs and complications related to traditionally low-cost foreign labor markets.

Safety Group Sets Kids' Drawstring Safety Rules

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on Friday set a new federal safety rule, saying drawstrings in certain children's clothing are now considered substantial product hazards.

The 5-0 vote finalized that jackets and coats with certain neck or hood drawstrings and those with certain waist or bottom drawstrings would be specified as substantial product hazard

American Apparel Said to Be in Talks to Replace Directors

American Apparel Inc., the clothing chain that raised cash earlier this year to avoid a shortfall, is in talks to replace two of its six board members, according to three people involved in the discussions.

The group of investors that bought $14.9 million of stock in a private placement in April is part of the negotiations, said the people, who declined to be identified because the talks are private. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dov Charney will remain on the board, the people said. The changes may be announced this week.

American Apparel & Footwear Association Applauds Textile and Apparel Procurement Fairness Act

The American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) applauded the introduction of the Department of Defense (DOD) Textile and Apparel Procurement Fairness Act (H.R. 2312), legislation that would level the playing field for government contractors who outfit American servicemen and women by limiting the government contracting preference currently enjoyed by federally-incarcerated inmates. The legislation was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Representative Walter Jones (R-NC) and Representative Larry Kissell (D-NC).
