Thailand Flooding Takes Toll on Textile and Clothing Industry
November 23, 2011

According to the latest figures from the Thai Garment Manufacturer Association, more than 160 companies in Thailand's textile industry are reeling from widespread flooding which has crippled the country over the last few weeks.

About 22 textile companies and 142 garment companies have been hit by floods, the association's secretary general Yuttana Silpsarnvitch said. The floods have stopped 25 percent of the country's garment production, with some firms unable to continue because of the broken supply chain, he said.

"The government is now trying hard to contain the water flow and make it dry as soon as possible," Yuttana said.

The National Cotton Council defended its farm bill reform ideas, which were presented to the supercommittee last week by the leaders of the House and Senate Agriculture committees.

Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) and House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas (R-Okla.) are putting the finishing touches on a farm bill proposal to shave $23 billion from the deficit over 10 years.

West Hollywood Becomes First City to Ban Fur Sales
November 9, 2011

In a triumph for animal rights activists but a grand loss for high-end retailers, the West Hollywood city council voted 3 to 1 to pass the nation's first ban on fur sales.

It was the third time that the council had voted on the city ordinance, which expressly prohibits the sale of clothing and accessories made from the skin or pelt of animals with hair, wool or fur. The ban was originally approved unanimously in September, but needed modifications before it could come for a final vote.
