York Business Owner Helps Third-world Chocolate Producer
York, Pennsylvania-based Marc Laucks and Company, which specializes in advising distributors and suppliers in printing management, made a philanthropic gesture to a struggling chocolate producer in Grenada. At the end of this month, Marc Laucks, CDC will head to the Fancy Food Show in New York City to meet the owners of the Grenada Chocolate Company where they will be distributing brochures that Laucks donated—a donation made after Laucks discovered some very interesting and noteworthy aspects of the company.
The Grenada Chocolate Company is the only chocolate producer in the world that completes the entire chocolate production cycle all in one site, from growing and harvesting the beans, to making the chocolate and setting the bars. In addition, the company has set up a cooperative between farmers and chocolate producers to ensure fair trade.
After being wiped out by Hurricane Ivan, one of the most severe Atlantic hurricanes on record, in 2004, the third-world company is trying to recover and the Grenada Chocolate Company is a prime example of responsible success. The company powers its operation with solar energy and the product is considered organic.
But even Laucks admits the chocolate played a role in his interest in the company. He describes his first taste of The Grenada Chocolate Company’s dark chocolate as an incredible high. “It was unlike any I’d ever tried. I never forgot that experience,” said Laucks.
