Some opponents to the laws say that the bans are causing businesses to lose more than just customers. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that shoplifting has increased in cities where customers are able to bring their own bags. One grocer interviewed claims to have lost nearly $10,000 due to shoplifting since the ban went into effect. A poll of Seattle area businesses showed that 21 percent of retailers reported increased theft since the ban went into effect on July 1, 2012.
