Despite outstanding seasons from third baseman Yandy Diaz and closer Jeff Johnson, the Akron RubberDucks fell short of the playoffs this year.
But the minor league baseball team picked up a different postseason win thanks in part to wacky promotions like “Brian Williams Pants on Fire Night” and a Goonies-themed bobble-belly giveaway.
Minor League Baseball named the RubberDucks as the winners of the 50th annual Larry MacPhail Award, which goes each year to the team with the best promotional season. The RubberDucks bested about 160 other teams.
“We are completely blown away with the support that this community has given us,” said RubberDucks owner Ken Babby. “This award is just a testament to the wonderful fans and families that have enjoyed coming to Canal Park these past few years.
