Ennis reported its first-quarter results last week. The company's net sales were mostly flat for the period, $142.5 million for the quarter compared to $143.3 million for the same quarter in 2011, although the company's sales by group flipped. Print sales were up at $87.3 million and apparel sales (under the Alstyle Apparel brand) were down to $55.2 million for the period ended May 31, 2012. Last year, print sales were $67.1 million and apparel sales were $76.1 million for the same quarter. The drop in apparel sales was due primarily to increased costs associated with record cotton prices last year, while the company's print sales were bolstered by the acquisitions of Printegra and PrintXcel in February of this year.
